Claremorris native and author Elizabeth Reapy has won the €10,000 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature 2017 for her debut novel Red Dirt. Red Dirt was published in June 2016 by Head of Zeus. The story takes place in Australia, telling the tales of three young Irish migrants escaping the collapsing economy at home. Surrounded by cheap drink and drugs, they make dangerous and impulsive choices — finding themselves in unfathomable situations.

Claremorris sports coaches join Mayo Goal to Work network

A group of jobseekers mainly from the Claremorris area have just completed a 10 week specialised sports coaching course which is hoped will provide them with the tools to coach in the local community, or gain some part time employment. The Goal to Work Sports Coach Training Programme, which ran for three days each week in Claremorris GAA Centre and Claremorris Family Resource Centre, allowed trainees to become qualified GAA, soccer, rugby, and athletics coaches, with additional sports modules in child protection, first aid, disability awareness, and walking leadership completed.

Claremorris Leisure Centre raises €5k for Cancer Care West

During the summer Claremorris Leisure Centre held its annual swimathon in aid of Cancer Care West. All proceeds raised from this event went directly to the charity. Cancer Care West provides support to cancer patients and their families from all over the west of Ireland. All of Cancer Care West’s services are provided at no cost to patients and their families, so it relies greatly on charitable fundraising and donations to meet the cost and demand of these services.
